Paper as important as ink in printout quality

A technology blog on Monsters and Critics claims the choice of paper is as important in establishing printout quality as the printer and ink choice
Thomas Schoener, writing for the Monsters and Critics technology blog, has claimed the choice of paper is as vital as the choice of printer and ink in determining print quality, and laments the extend of choice, stating “the market for the right piece of paper is not very transparent”.
Although laser printers are able to produce “perfectly adequately” with normal copy paper, “paper selection, however, plays an enormous role with inkjet printers. The right kind depends on the type of ink used. The packaging should tell you for which ink the paper is designed. Forexample, the dye-based ink used in most photo printers doesn’t stay on the surface. Instead, it’s absorbed into the paper.”
Torsten Neumann, of computer magazine Chip, commented: “Pigment ink is used for printing text on normal paper while dye-based ink is used for photo printing on special paper.”
Gregor Geiger, German Pulp and Paper Association (VDP), remarked on the effect the weight of the paper has on the printout: “The question of weight depends on the kind of printing.” Forms and monochrome printouts can be printed on paper with a grade of 75 to 80 grams per square metre, while greeting cards and adverts would benefit from a grade of 90 to 100grams per square metre.
Although printer manufacturers offer paper cut to their specific printers, Geiger comments: “The paper isn’t produced by the printer marker, but just marketed under their label.” Monsters and Critics recommend experimenting to discover which paper best suits your printer, although warns laser printers may be damaged by use of incorrect paper.

While the industry is abuzz with the promise of cloud computing — a new approach to IT in which all business applications and data are moved to the Web — many industry insiders warn that the strategy is fraught with peril. Specifically, skeptics say businesses relying on remote, Web-based providers to ensure critical data is safe, computer applications are run efficiently, and all other computing needs are easily met are simply asking for trouble.
“As a security guy, I tend to look at the idea of cloud computing from a risk perspective,” says Kai Axford, a national manager at Accretive Solutions, a computer security firm. “I have to tell you, I don’t see a lot of companies agreeing to become liable if your data gets breached on their network.”
In concept, cloud computing does seem to live up to its “breath of fresh air” marketing. Instead of dealing with often increasingly overtaxed in-house IT departments, companies working in the cloud will be able to access all their computing needs the same way many businesses already log in to Microsoft’s Hotmail for their messages, stop by YouTube to catch a video or two, or visit Google Docs’ online word processor to jot down a few thoughts. Eric Goldsmith, president of eScrap, detailed ways in which his company leverages the cloud. “We do host photos, use a few online tools and pay for other online tools to help us with our business,” he said.

Pennsylvanian county cuts costs using remanufactured cartridges
Franklin County in the US state has revealed that by using remanufactured cartridges it has saved over $170,000 in office supplies purchasing.
The county’s purchase of remanufactured toner cartridges has allowed it to save nearly $170,000 between July 2009 and December 2010 on office supplies, according to Public Opinion Online. To add to this, county officials stated that $56,000 was saved on the purchase of printing equipment, with total savings said to be equal to “about one-sixth of a mill[ion] of county real estate tax”.
The county commissioners in the area also wanted an emphasis on “going paperless” with printing, and this has saved 1.36 million printed pages, or 272 cases, in 18 months. The report, made by Purchasing Director Brenda Covert, was released in the run-up to a $122 million final budget for the county.
Other information released by the county officials stated that the initiatives came from the desire to cut eight percent from Franklin County’s budget two years ago, with printing costs reduced through use of a managed print service networking its 83 printers together.
568 items, with 237 of these inkjet and toner cartridges, are approved by purchase by the county, a marked change from 2008, when county departments could order from over 25,000. The specific saving from using remanufactured toner cartridges came in at $41,250.

The Importance of Color Printing Within the Educational Environment
It’s no secret that materials printed in color are more visually appealing than those printed in black and white. The aesthetic impact alone is just one of the benefits of color printing. New technologies are making color printing more affordable for organizations, and when implemented into the educational environment, color dramatically increases the students’ performance as well.
Independent studies have shown that color increases student learning and retention by as much as 78 percent while reducing errors by up to 80 percent. Color also helps students locate information more quickly, increases their comprehension by 73 percent and increases their willingness to read and participate by up to 80 percent, according to several studies.

How to handle Low Ink Message on Reman inks
If you notice that the ink gauge displays low or no ink level, DO NOT be alarmed. This is very common because you are using a remanufactured inkjet. The ink gauge on your printer will no longer read the ink levels correctly because it does not recognize your cartridge as “new”. There is no way to reset this gauge, but this message can be bypassed easily when necessary and will not affect your printing performance.
Keep in mind that the ink gauges on printers only serve as an ESTIMATE of how much ink may be remaining in the cartridge.
To continue printing, press and hold the stop/reset button or the resume button for 10 seconds. Please consult your printer’s user manual if you are not sure which button to press.

You may have seen recent ads by Kodak claiming low priced ink.
This article will compare it to HP’s #940 ink cartridges.
Staples price for the hi-capacity Kodak 10XL (8237216) Black Ink Cartridge, High Yield is $16.99 claiming a page yield of 770 pages. This yields 2.27 cents per page.
The HP black #940 sells for $25.99 for 1000 page nominal capacity or 2.6 cents per page. The black #940XL sells for $35.99 for 2200 pages or 1.6 cents per page.
The Kodak hi capacity black cartridge compares well with the HP starter cartridge it comes up well short of the HP hi capacity cartridge.

Starter cartridge ploy backfires on HP color laser printer
HP has rendered the purchase of its mid range color laser printer the CP 3025 unjustifiable with its starter cartridge
Purchasing a new CP 3025 printer costs $649.00 plus a full set of replacement cartridges at $928.96 totals1627.00 This combination yields 8.000 pages black and 10,000 pages of color printing. This reduced toner capacity is a result of the low capacity ‘starter’ cartridges supplied with the CP 3025.
The more robust 4025 printer costs $999.00 and comes with one set of full toner cartridges with printing capacity for 8,500 pages black and 11,000 pages of color printing.
Unless the customer plans on doing less than 3,000 pages of printing on his new color laser printer he cannot justify the additional expense for the lighter duty printer. Furthermore any subsequent toner purchases move the advantage further in favor of the CP 4025.
The 4025 is faster at 35 ppm vs 31 ppm for the 3025. and has 256 mb memory vs 512 mb for the 4025. The CP 4025 is a more robust printer with a monthly duty cycle of 100,000 pages vs 75,000 for the CP 3025.

HP Color laser CP 2025 vs CP 3025
The CP 3025 base unit costs $649.00 vs $449.00 for the base CP 2025.
The 3025 is faster at 31 ppm vs 21 ppm for the 2025 and has 256 mb memory vs 128 mb for the 2025. The CP 3025 is a more robust printer with a monthly duty cycle of 75,000 pages vs only 40,000 for the CP 2025.
If you have a very low demand for color printing and speed is not a factor the CP 2025 may be your best bet.
However, the cost per page to print is more for the CP 2025 than the CP 3025. The purpose of this article is to calculate how much printing it will take to justify the additional $250 expenditure for the CP 3025.
The black cartridge for the 2025 costs $122.99 with a page yield of 3500 pages. The black cartridge for the 3025 costs $133.99 for 5000 pages.
The 2025 colors all cost $120.99 for a 2800 page yield vs $264.99 for 7,000 pages for the 3025.
All pricing is taken from HP’s website using a page yield is 5% which is the industry standard. However, color printing usually averages around 20% coverage.
The total cost of ownership is the same to print 35,000 pages @ 5% coverage or 17,500 pages at 10% or 8,750 at 20% (more the average). This includes the printer with startup cartridges, 9 additional black and 11.5 of each color for the 2025 or 6 black and 4 of each color for the 3025.
The total cost of ownership (TCO) for the CP 2025 at the above print volumes comes to $5730.07. The TCO for the CP 3025 is $4,682.82 or $1047.25 less.
By page 6750 @ 5% coverage or page 3370 @ 10% or page 1690 at 20% coverage the savings in toner makes up for the additional capitol cost of the printer.

Lexmark's claim of lowest black ink cost is limited
Lexmark claims the lowest black ink cost. The claim is true but limited to black ink only.
Lexmark™ 105XL High-Yield Cyan Ink Tank Model 14N1012 Costs $4.99 with a page yield of 510 pages for a cost per page of 0.98 cents per page.
This cartridge is used in the Prestige Pro 905 multifunction which sells for $299.
This ink cost per page is better than HP’s best deal which is the #940 ink cartridge. The black #940XL sells for $35.99 for 2200 pages or 1.6 cents per page.

The Office Jet series 8000 and 8500 sell for about the same as the comparable Lexmark machines.
However, Lexmark’s color inks cost $17.99 for a 600 page yield or 3.0 cents per page.
The color # 940XLs sell for $25.99 for 1400 pages or 1.8 cents per page.
The Lexmark black ink is 39% less per page than HP, however the remaining three colors are 67% more.
The tank capacity of the black Lexmark is a quarter that of the HP which means the user will be changing cartridges four times as often. The capacity comparison is a little better with the colors but they are still less than half of HP which means they will be changed more than twice as often.
